What is Mother Language Day?

Every one of us has a "mother language," which is the first language we learn at home from our families when we are little. These languages are very special; they show our culture and history. A group called UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) decided that there should be a special day to celebrate these languages every year. This is called "International Mother Language Day." The main idea of this day is to remind everyone to use and protect our own languages, so that every language in the world can continue to exist.

我們每個人都有自己的「母語」，就是我們從小在家裡從家人那裡學會的第一種語言。這些語言非常特別，它們展現了我們的文化和歷史。有一個叫做聯合國教科文組織（UNESCO）的團體，他們決定每年要有一個特別的日子來慶祝這些語言。這就是「世界母語日」。這個日子的主要目的是提醒大家，要記得使用和保護我們自己的語言，讓世界上的每種語言都能繼續存在。

Mother Language Day in Taiwan

Here in Taiwan, we also care a lot about our mother languages. That's why Taiwan's Ministry of Education started promoting "Taiwan Mother Language Day" many years ago. This means that every school in Taiwan chooses one day each week to be its "Mother Language Day." On this special day, teachers and students are encouraged to speak their mother language as much as possible, whether it's during classes, breaks, or even on the school broadcast. This helps everyone practice speaking their mother language more often, and also helps these precious languages be passed down to the next generation.

在台灣，我們也很重視我們的母語。所以，台灣教育部從多年前就開始推動「台灣母語日」。這表示台灣的每所學校，都會選定每週的其中一天作為「母語日」。在這特別的一天，老師和學生們都被鼓勵盡可能多說自己的母語，無論是在課堂上、下課時間，甚至學校廣播都如此。這有助於每個人更常練習說母語，也幫助這些珍貴的語言傳承給下一代。

Pitou Junior High's Creative Learning

At Pitou Junior High, we have a wonderful artistic way to learn our mother language. Our students drew and created beautiful and interesting posters with Taiwanese proverbs and sayings. These artworks are truly amazing, showing the children's creativity and their dedication to their mother language. The school displays these fantastic posters in the hallway, so more people can see them. This is a great way to not only encourage students to learn and use Taiwanese proverbs, but also to help everyone cherish their own mother language, while also showing the talents of our school's students!
